New Year, New Me?

With 2025 approaching quickly, and because I have not written anything in a little while due to the “busyness of life”, I thought I would share my thoughts about new year’s resolutions, goals, mindsets, vision boards, and the like.

I have always loved making new year’s resolutions, making lists in order to ‘better my life’, and having my specific vision boards for the new year and extensive, detailed Pinterest boards. But, is this helpful? How can one make these seemingly creative outlets actually utilize resources to make a positive impact in their own life? In the lives of others? How can one (actually) better themselves?

Who determines what’s better?

Innately, there are positive things, traits, and decisions, and there are negative ones in the world. This is determined by the innate conscience that was imbedded inside of us when we were created by God. The morality we all innately know as human beings, and the desire to do good, to be light, and to experience joy, was given to us as a free gift from our Creator! And new years resolutions are just a small, specific place in time where we can start this drive to aim towards positive light.

One important thing to remember: new years resolutions, goals you set for the near future or even for the rest of your life, and bucket lists are for YOU. They are not so you can prove to someone else that you, too, can accomplish things. They are not so that you can compare your goals to others’. They are not so that you can post on your Instagram story the list of things you’ve accomplished in a year so that others may compare themselves to you. Visions of changes you want to make, how you want to grow, who you would like to become, whether that's in the upcoming year, in the next five years, or before you finish your time here on Earth, are private, personal things. Yes, share in others’ success, and find people to share in your’s! But the whole world does not need to know what you are doing and, no offense meant, but nor do they care about what you are doing or changing.

Another thing: don’t put unnecessary pressure on yourself! No one is expecting anything of you, and if they are, then that is their own issue to deal with. Personally, I am taking this time to make some lists of things I would like to accomplish in the upcoming year, making some Pinterest vision boards, and cleaning out my room. Giving clothes to thrift, putting up pictures that inspire me to grow, and setting some goals for myself to work towards all seem like little choices, but the little things will all eventually add up to something much bigger, and that is something I can trust in.

What are your goals? How can you grow in order to help those around you? What are some positive choices you can make that will shine a light to the world?

Grow to make yourself better, so that you can make the world better. Change yourself so that you can change the world.
